I have been presenting a show on Oban FM now for over 8 years,
beginning late August’97 through to the present day with no breaks
since. Just a few name changes. From "THE MOOG DISCIPLES" to "A
BRAVE NEW WORLD", and then thanks to a surreal dream "PAPER MONKEY"
was born. To accommodate the increasing attention of the show to new
musical; sub genres as well as the best in independent music, from a
Neptune's produced slice of "GOOD POP" to the confessional self
therapy music of Daniel Jonston.
In 2000 co presenter Ian Ross left,. and I was joined by now
"TRANSMISSION 2" Presenter Dave Cullen. to amalgamate our record
collections for wider ranging musical possibilities.
"PAPER MONKEY" is like a giant tree with many branches for many
birds. "PAPER MONKEY" is one of the most dynamic radio shows in the
U.K. today. It provides an outlet for our own personal music
explorations. I believe great music leads to even greater music, and
so this exploration has been bourne out over the last 8 years.
without wishing to be pinned down on what we play, the format of the
show usually consists of an up tempo first hour " PUNK, HOUSE,
ELECTRO, HEAVY SOUL, FUNK, AFRO BEAT, GLITCH, ROCKABILLY, BREAKS,
RAREGROOVE, BRAZILLIAN, JAZZ,and whatever new scene is emerging,
mashed up together, giving way to a more mellow introspective 2nd
hour of SONGWRITERS, INDIE,PSYCHE-FOLK, ALT COUNTRY, BLUEGRASS, AND
RAGTIME, OUTSIDER ELECTRONICA, MUSIC FROM AROUND THE WORLD, AND
"LOST AND FOUND ARTISTS" from different decades.
In 2005-2006 We are exploring live events too in collaboration with
"MUTH ARTS COLLECTIVE" With two events already staged so far, See
www,muth.co.uk for details.
We also do a little film reviewing, as part of the show, and we like
the occasional "RANT". Oban F.M. allows us the musical freedom to
play what we like, which is great for us, and hopefully for you the
listeners. Keep listening and please contact us direct on air via
this website.
